Whisky Launch Update: Raising the bar at Aber Falls!
The launch of our first whisky, and the first to be distilled in North Wales for over 100 years, has meant the Distillery has been a busy place over the last few months.
Our whisky started life in 2018 and then spent the next three years maturing before being disgorged from the casks by our Master Blender, Dr Kirsty McCallum, ably assisted by our extremely talented Distillery team. It was ready for bottling in early May 2021 and went on sale on 17th May at noon. Such was the demand that we had queues out of the door of the visitor centre, and we sold out within one hour of the whisky appearing on our website – now that’s the spirit!
In order to help spread the word, we mailed out 50 gift boxes to key journalists, allowing them an early taste of our whisky in the hope that they will tell our story far and wide. We’re delighted to say, the feedback from them has been amazing and we were delighted to appear in top publications in Wales and beyond. And we were absolutely thrilled when GQ Magazine shone the spotlight on us by making our whisky, Whisky of the Week.
We’ve known for quite some time that the flavour of any spirit is enhanced and becomes truly memorable by the environment in which it is drunk; the precious solitude of a cosy chair by the fire; the banter amongst a group of close friends or a meal prepared and shared with love. With this in mind, we teamed up with Great British Menu finalist and Ready Steady Cook chef, Ellis Barrie, to create two delectable dishes, one savoury and one sweet, to pair with our whisky. Ellis teamed up with James Wright, our MD, and the duo hosted a virtual cookery demonstration and tasting for key journalists and influencers on 13th May – available to watch here. Ellis’ recipes, a Snowdonia Lamb dish and a take on the traditional Eton Mess, can be found here, so you can try them and discover for yourself just how beautifully they complement our whisky.
Now that the Inaugural launch has been and gone we hope we have left you wanting more. We are looking forward to releasing many more age-declared whiskies and special editions in the future so keep an eye on our Blog and Social Media for details. We will also be issuing our non-aged declared bottling in September this year; just in time to warm you through as the summer months fade and the chill of autumn creeps in.
If you have missed the Inaugural launch you can still immerse yourself in all things Welsh by coming along to our Visitor Centre where you can enjoy a wonderful selection of our spirits along with some delicious Welsh products which we have had great pleasure researching and making available to you. If you book to one of our distillery tours, we have some inaugural release whisky available for you to sample at the end, while stocks last!
We are really proud of the whisky we have created and delighted that it has been so well received. We would like to say a big thank you to all our customers who placed their trust in us to create the ‘Spirit of North Wales’ and demonstrated that faith by buying up every bottle we produced.
